Emalahleni Local Municipality estimated the damage caused by the burnt electricity poles in part of the Siyanqoba section on 8 March at R250 000.
According to Lebogang Mofokeng, the municipal spokesperson, the cause of the fire is still unknown and police are still investigating. Mofokeng said the situation was devastating as residents were left without electricity. “The estimated cost for the reinstatement of burnt electric poles and associated components is about R250,000,” Mofokeng disclosed.
Local resident, Thabile Zulu, said that as a community there is no unity because there was no reason for someone to torch the electricity poles and leave the community without electricity. On the other hand, Banele Msibi believes that the municipality will take drastic measures and ensure that electricity is restored in Siyanqoba. Mofokeng urged residents in any areas to respect and protect municipal infrastructure as it is the only means, instrument and measure of providing the much needed basic services. “We urge people to pay their electricity bills. And there’s a big prize for anyone who can assist in identifying those who sabotaged the municipality infrastructure,” he said.
