DELMAS – Investigating officer Kgabo Mothupi took the stand at the Delmas Magistrate Court on May 14, 2024, recounting the events of March 22, 2024. Mothupi, called in by a former SAPS commander, provided testimony regarding the incident. The bail application date has been postponed to May 21, 2024.
Mothupi stressed that he received a call on the day of the incident, informing him of the situation. Wessel Badenhorst, head of security at Argent, stands accused of the murder of Mzwakhe Hlatshwayo and attempted murder. Mothupi, while delivering his testimony, painted a picture of who Badenhorst really is, bringing to light other cases against him involving the victimization of black individuals. Mothupi also informed the court that Badenhorst cannot be granted bail because he is of Namibian descent and resides on a farm property owned by his employer, meaning he does not have a South African address of his own.
According to the police report, on March 22, 2024, they responded to a call at a farm, where they found a woman with gunshot wounds. They later discovered the body of Mzwakhe Hlatshwayo, with multiple gunshot wounds, deceased.
Siboniso Hlatshwayo, the brother of the deceased, expressed satisfaction with Mothupi’s testimony. “All we want is justice, and today’s progression gives us some insight into what happened on the day of the incident,” he said.
Sonto Mbeko shared her perspective on Mothupi’s testimony. “The investigating officer is determined to see Badenhorst behind bars, especially considering his track record of cases involving the victimization of black individuals. It would be a victory for justice if Badenhorst is indeed convicted,” she remarked.
Shaun Mahlangu, representing the Victor Khanye Local Municipality Subregion of MK, commented on the proceedings at the Delmas Magistrate Court. “While we are pleased with today’s developments, the broader issue is the perceived inequality within our justice system. There is a sentiment that white individuals are treated more favourably than black individuals in our jails. This case has transcended a mere murder trial; it has become a racial issue,” he emphasized.
