DELMAS – A massive manhunt is underway following the tragic killing of a police officer stationed at the Rapid Rail Police Unit Springs (RRPU) on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, on the R42 offramp in Delmas while driving in his private vehicle. The officer, identified as Sergeant Serwadime Harry Mokadi, was fatally shot on the R42 onramp towards N12 in Delmas, sending shockwaves through the community and sparking urgent efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, expressed deep concern over the brazen attack on law enforcement. In a solemn statement, General Manamela remarked, “The killing of Sergeant Mokadi is a devastating loss for our police force and the community at large. We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”

According to preliminary reports, the incident unfolded when concerned citizens alerted police to a potential hijacking scene on the R42 offramp in the Delmas policing precinct. Responding swiftly, law enforcement encountered a maroon sedan matching the description of the suspected vehicle. A confrontation ensued, culminating in a deadly exchange of gunfire.

In the chaos that ensued, Sergeant Mokadi, along with another female victim, were discovered with gunshot wounds. Tragically, Sergeant Mokadi succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the injured woman was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects had fled the scene, leaving behind incriminating evidence, including a police-owned firearm reported stolen in Thabazimbi, as well as cash and other items subject to forensic examination.

As authorities have since intensified efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, Detective Lieutenant Colonel Isak Mokwana from the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has issued a public appeal for information. Concerned citizens are urged to come forward with any relevant information that may aid in the investigation by reaching out at 082 461 9278.

General Manamela extended heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Mokadi’s family and expressed solidarity with the law enforcement community in the wake of this tragedy. Emphasising the gravity of the crime, General Manamela reaffirmed the commitment of SAPS to pursue justice relentlessly, stating, “The killing of Sergeant Mokadi underscores the dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty. We will spare no effort in bringing his killers to justice.”
