Father appeals for donations to cover son’s  provincial team travel expenses

MIDDELBURG – Thirteen-year-old rugby sensation Bongumusa Masango from Middelburg is edging closer to securing a spot in South Africa’s elite youth rugby team. All he needs to do is maintain his momentum, keeping his focus firmly on the path ahead.

The industrious grade 7 rugby player at Middelburg Primary School has recently earned a spot in the B team of the U/13 Pumas provincial rugby squad. This positions Bongumusa favourably for potential participation in the provincial playoffs and the SA championship.

Speaking to the Highveld Chronicle, he expressed little surprise at his selection. “I knew that with hard work and discipline, I had to achieve something,” he remarked. “I participated in the first round of trials and got selected. Then, I proceeded to the second round and was picked again. It feels great. Being in the provincial team is an honour and a privilege.”

Bongumusa also has his sights set on earning a place in the A team. “It’s possible. It’s not magic; it’s all about hard work and dedication,” he affirmed.

The young athlete’s journey into rugby began in grade 1, and he acknowledges the crucial role played by his parents in his development. “Wanna thank my parents for firstly signing me up to play rugby. That is how this whole thing started,” he added. ” Thanks for paying for my tours and fees to go to the provincial team. And for all the support they have been giving me.”

Bongumusa revealed that participation in the provincial team requires significant travel, often placing financial strain on his parents in the absence of sponsorship. Despite raising R6,500 towards the required R12,500 for his tours, they still need an additional R6,000.

” It will be for a great cause, showcasing my talent in the provincial squad, which might lead me to join the South African team. I believe it is a good investment,” he stated.

Thando Masango, Bongumusa’s father, appealed to anyone willing to offer financial assistance to reach out to him at 078 411 1756.
