KWAMHLANGA – In a remarkable display of community solidarity and commitment to inclusivity, Kwathando Care Centre successfully hosted an Autism Awareness Event on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at its premises in Suncity “A” Kwamhlanga. The event, designed to educate and advocate for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), drew a diverse crowd of supporters, professionals, and community members eager to learn and engage.
Under the theme “Understanding Autism: Empowering Through Knowledge,” Mrs. Joyce Mahlangu extended a heartfelt welcome, indicating the importance of collective action in supporting individuals with autism.
Reflecting on the event’s success, Lucas Nkuna, Manager of Kwathando Care Centre, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the positive impact on the community. “Today’s event was a testament to our collective commitment to promoting understanding and acceptance of Autism. Through education and advocacy, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with disabilities,” Nkuna remarked.
The programme featured a series of enlightening sessions with Amanda Phungula, an esteemed expert in the field, delivering a comprehensive presentation on autism and effective ways to interact with and support individuals with the condition. Parents and members of the community actively participated in a lively Question and Answer session, seeking clarification and sharing insights.
Stakeholders from various sectors, including the Department of Social Development, Education, Zenzeleni Primary School and Thembisile Hani Fire and Rescue, provided valuable perspectives and initiatives aimed at promoting autism awareness and inclusion. Ms. Beauty Teme from Thembisile Hani Municipality shared the importance of the Freedom Charter in relation to persons with disabilities.
Engaging activities further enriched the event, with demonstrations by Thembisile Hani Fire & Rescue captivating the audience. Precious Ngobeni led collaborative initiatives emphasising unity and support, while learners from Kwathando showcased their talents and creativity, highlighting the capabilities of individuals with autism.
In her closing remarks, Elizabeth Ngobeni expressed gratitude to all participants for their unwavering support and emphasised the importance of ongoing advocacy and education in creating a more inclusive society.
