MIDDELBURG – The mother collapsed upon seeing her son’s alleged abuser approach the dock.
Her heart momentarily ceased beating, and she had to be carried outside the courtroom for cardiovascular resuscitation, a heart-rending scene at the Middelburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 10 April 2024, as a 42-year-old woman, Mamunyane Mokwana, appeared on charges of allegedly raping a 12-year-old man in Mhluzi, Avalon.
According to reports, Mokwana visited the boy’s grandparents’ house on Friday evening. Following a brief conversation with one of the grandparents, she proceeded directly to the boy’s room and initiated sexual advances.
A family member, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed to Highveld Chronicle outside court that she undressed the man and forced him into sexual activity after inappropriate touching, revealed the source.
“The scars on the boy’s body indicate that she even assaulted him before engaging in sexual activity with him.”
Mokwana was arrested on Monday, 8 April, and made her initial appearance the following day. She remains in custody pending a formal bail application scheduled for April 16.
Community members who gathered to support the victim’s mother vehemently opposed bail for Mokwana.
“What she did is a complete betrayal of womanhood. Women are nurturers and protectors of children; they do not perpetrate such atrocious acts,” declared Sahara Mashianoke.
“She does not represent us. We adamantly oppose her release on bail. Our children are not safe as long as she is free.”
