MIDDELBURG – The DA expressed relief as the implementation of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in the Steve Tshwete municipality is set to commence.
The instrumentation and control systems, estimated at approximately R9 million, will empower the municipality to manage its own load shedding and monitor water reservoir levels.
DA councillor Damien Klopper highlighted his party’s efforts in pushing for information and updates regarding the project, which is scheduled for completion in March this year.
Klopper emphasized the significance of the system, stating, “Implementing this system will enable the municipality to handle its own load shedding according to Eskom’s schedule.”
The SCADA system was approved by council last year with the aim of facilitating remote switching and control of electrical substations during load shedding periods.
“While the ANC administration took its time in implementing this system, the DA’s persistent advocacy will finally yield results,” Klopper remarked.
He noted that the second phase of the system involves constructing and installing infrastructure at the Gholfsig substation, with the municipality expected to finalize the modernization work before the end of the 2024/25 financial year.
“Moreover, the system will also be deployed in the water division. The upgrade of the telemetry system to monitor reservoir levels for Middelburg Water supply has already commenced, covering 16 water reservoirs,” he added.
