– Leader of the Middelburg and Hendrina Residents Front (MHRF), Jomo Segage, expressed his relief after being released following almost half a day spent in the Brooklyn holding cells in Pretoria.
He was apprehended on 28 February for organising a protest at the Israel embassy.
Segage, known for his outspoken stance against Israel’s oppressive treatment of Palestinians, has been advocating for increased pressure on Israel to adhere to international laws, particularly following an order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning Israel.
The ICJ issued an order regarding provisional measures on 26 January 2024, instructing Israel to take all necessary actions to prevent any acts that could be interpreted as genocidal under the 1948 Genocide Convention.
Segage was released the next day. The exact charges against him remain unclear, but he expressed his happiness at being free. “I am pleased to be home and free. At this moment, that’s what matters most,” he remarked.
