eMalahleni – The Highveld Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) held a significant workshop at Thembelihle Self-Help Centre, Ext 4, Kwaguqa, on August 01, 2024.

HCCI, in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), organised the event with a focus on providing non-profit organisations, companies, and cooperatives with vital insights to enhance their compliance with regulations and access to funding opportunities, with the Highveld Chronicle serving as the official media partner for the chamber.

Dudu Zulu, CEO of HCCI, emphasised the Chamber’s role in empowering businesses with essential knowledge. “It’s important to start with these people as the Chamber. We are now going to play the role of a help desk for them, and we cannot do that without informing them of what needs to be done,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of understanding tax exemption and compliance with Section 18A, which allows businesses to benefit their donors with tax deductions, ultimately fostering community growth.

It was noted during the workshop that NPOs often do not take information-sharing workshops seriously, assuming they already know everything. However, each workshop provides unique insights, and business people were encouraged to attend such gatherings to empower themselves with knowledge.

Rambuda Shelton, SEDA regional facilitator, explained that the agency assists businesses from conceptualisation to growth, ensuring they are equipped to thrive independently. “We offer business advice, help with starting businesses, and support them as they expand,” he said.

Local business owner Nhlanhla Nhlapho shared that he learned a lot about financial reporting and the differences between NPOs, NPCs, and voluntary organisations. “These distinctions are crucial for compliance and securing funding,” he said.

Another Entrepreneur Iris Nkosi appreciated the advice on business growth and funding, emphasising the need for relevant documents and private companies to secure funds over government support. She also highlighted her challenge of securing a permanent business space, underscoring the struggles faced by small business owners.

The workshop underscored the importance of continuous learning and adaptation for business success.

HCCI, SEDA, and Highveld Chronicle are working together to empower local businesses with knowledge and resources. HCCI’s next event will be hosted at Mamalisa, eMalahleni, on 15 August 2024. The entrance fee is R500, and for RSVPs, you can contact 083 529 8380 or 068 063 7814.
