DELMAS – The Delmas Cleaning and Greening Project continues to gain momentum as local businesses and residents actively join forces to transform the Victor Khanye Local Municipality. Since its launch on September 02, 2024, this collaborative initiative has seen significant participation from local enterprises such as Thando Tech, Botleng Colliery, and Plantcor Mining, who contributed the first batch of 5,000 trees. Supported by Ritluka, Dimbane Resources, and KA Magubela Trading, the project is creating lasting environmental and community impact through large-scale tree planting, cleaning, and painting efforts across the municipality.The project is supported by Ritluka, Dimbane Resources, and KA Magubela Trading, reflecting a strong corporate commitment to environmental sustainability. The community is encouraged to join this effort to make Delmas greener and healthier. The cleaning, painting, and greening initiative is already underway, starting on Sarel Cilliers Street in the town.
Thabo Motau, the co-founder of Delmas First, told the Highveld Chronicle, “‘A beautiful town is a thriving town.’ This ambitious project seeks to paint every house in the town within 36 months while continuously planting trees, making it a model for sustainable community development that will benefit generations to come.”
Furthermore, trees play an essential role in maintaining air quality, regulating climate, and providing habitats for wildlife. By committing to this large-scale planting effort, Delmas First is not only mitigating the adverse environmental impacts of mining but also enhancing the overall quality of life for the community of Victor Khanye Local Municipality.
In addition to tree planting, the project includes the cleaning and painting of the R555 an important provincial road that connects Gauteng and Mpumalanga. This key route not only supports economic activity and connectivity but also represents the community’s commitment to maintaining a clean and welcoming environment. The cleaning and painting initiative aims to improve the aesthetics and safety of this important traffic route.
Vusi Buda, the Executive Mayor of Victor Khanye Local Municipality, commented on the greening project: “The community’s self-driven initiative to clean and green their town is a testament to the power of collective action, with Delmas and Municipality relief efforts leading the charge. From painting and repairing main roads to fixing non-functional lights and planting trees, this ongoing programme is transforming the town’s landscape despite financial hurdles, proving that community spirit and determination can overcome even the toughest challenges.”
