DELMAS – In a vibrant display of resilience and determination, the Hope of Hopeless Youth Centre hosted its much-anticipated Elderly Tournament on October 05, 2024 at the Vukuzenzele sports ground. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as spirited Grannies and Masters took to the soccer and netball fields, demonstrating not only their remarkable skills but also a profound sense of community and camaraderie. This unique event brought together generations, showcasing the vitality and energy of elders who refuse to be sidelined, all while celebrating the joy of healthy aging and community involvement.

The event, aimed at fostering healthy aging and community involvement, attracted throngs of avid supporters rooting for their preferred teams.

In the soccer matches, Khethumnedeni FC achieved a remarkable 2-1 triumph over Amagroetman FC, while Izimbokodo Ladies outperformed Vezukuhle Ladies with a convincing 4-0 victory.

The netball matches were equally riveting, with Izimbokodo Ladies FC and Vezukuhle Ladies FC engaging in a 6-6 deadlock. The intensity and camaraderie displayed were a testament to the participants’ fervour for the game.

Relebohile Ndebele, President of the Hope of Hopeless Youth Centre, conveyed to Highveld Chronicle that the Elderly Tournament concept was inspired by the centre’s dedication to intergenerational connection and community cohesion. “We acknowledged that seniors often encounter marginalisation and seclusion, despite their invaluable experience and wisdom. To counter this, we established a platform where elders can partake in enjoyable, competitive activities, promoting socialisation, physical activity, and cognitive stimulation,” he articulated.

“The Elderly Tournament strives to profoundly influence the lives of participating seniors, offering myriad benefits. We envision combating solitude and isolation through socialisation, fostering connections with peers and younger generations, and nurturing friendships and support networks. The event will elevate self-assurance and confidence, nurture a sense of purpose and belonging, and encourage cognitive stimulation and mental acuity. Physical exertion will improve overall health and mobility, while access to health assessments and wellness resources will be provided. Ultimately, the tournament will alleviate stress and anxiety, bestow a sense of achievement and pride, and enhance overall quality of life, rekindling seniors’ sense of community, connectivity, and contentment,” he added.

Zanele Ndlovu, councillor of Ward 7 and goalkeeper in the ladies’ soccer team, as well as a participant in the netball team Izimbokodo, relayed to Highveld Chronicle that the experience was exceedingly gratifying and astonishing. “Playing alongside elders to maintain our physical fitness and health was immensely enjoyable. We intend to continue this practice. Juggling my roles as a councillor, parent, and community leader is no easy feat; staying active not only alleviates stress but is also crucial, especially for the younger generation, to clear their minds and, most importantly, to prioritise education and steer clear of substance abuse,” she expressed.
