EMALAHLENI – The trial of alleged killer Tendani Masindi is set to resume on October 30, 2024, following a sigh of relief for the Muthali family after the bail denial judgement made on September 27. Masindi faces a charge of murder after allegedly killing his girlfriend, Elsie Muthali, on September 1, 2024.
Reports indicate that Muthali died after being shot multiple times by Masindi using a suspected state firearm before he handed himself over to the police.
The court’s decision has provided much-needed solace to the family, who expressed concerns about their safety and well-being if Masindi were released.
It has also offered a momentary sense of tranquillity as they continue to grieve for their cherished daughter.
“We will not stop until justice is fully served for Elsie,” said the victim’s father, John Muthali, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring that her tragic death will not be in vain.
During the hearing, the court acknowledged the severity of the crime and the potential threat to the Muthali family if Masindi were granted bail.
The family visibly showed emotion in court and expressed gratitude for the decision, stating that it provided them with a sense of security amidst their grief.
A petition signed by over 250 concerned residents of eMalahleni was also presented in court in opposition to Masindi’s bail.
The petition highlighted fears of further violence and the importance of protecting victims’ families in such cases.
The denial of bail has been viewed as a step towards justice not only for the Muthali family but also for the broader fight against gender-based violence in South Africa.
As the case progresses, public interest remains high, with many eagerly anticipating further developments in the trial.
