KAMELRIVIER – The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) in Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality has issued a warning to the public to stay away from the river that separates Shaluza and Kamelrivier due to the sighting of a large crocodile.
On Monday, April 28, three fishermen spotted the crocodile at one of their usual fishing spots. A video currently circulating on social media shows the creature lurking in the water.
Petrus Mtshweni, a resident of Kamelrivier, said he’s seen the crocodile before—when it was much smaller and he was still in school.
“I saw it once while I was still in school. My worry now is that if it’s this big, the chances are there could be more crocodiles in this river, and now we have to be worried about our livestock,” Mtshweni said.
Masilela Joseph from the MTPA urged residents not to approach rivers with fast-moving or overflowing water and warned of crocodiles spotted near the walking bridge. He advised that livestock should be watered at home to avoid potential attacks.
“Please don’t go near rivers when the water is overflowing from rain — that’s when crocodiles tend to appear. Be especially cautious of the river between Shaluza and Kamelrivier, as well as the walking bridge and possible hippos. Crocodiles are extremely dangerous to livestock when they come to drink water. Rather water them at home and stay safe,” Masilela advised.
