MIDDELBURG – Thungela’s Goedehoop Colliery officially handed over a newly built cafeteria facility to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality on April 13, 2025.
Located at the Mhluzi Industrial Park, the facility represents a major milestone in efforts to stimulate local economic development.
According to Tman Mphokane, General Manager at Goedehoop Colliery, the mine invested R4.8 million into the project. He explained that the aim is to create spaces that encourage economic activity within host communities.
“Our focus is on building platforms that enable local economic development. This investment supports small businesses by giving them a space to grow and thrive, ultimately contributing to the long-term resilience of the community,” said Mphokane.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Councillor Zandile Joseph Ngobeni, applauded the initiative, stating that the cafeteria aligns with the municipality’s goals for local economic development.
“This project comes at the perfect time. The industrial area is expanding, and people are gradually moving in. This canteen will not only support emerging local businesses but also benefit the broader community by creating job opportunities,” said Ngobeni.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining the facility and cautioned the public against vandalism.
