DELMAS – The PJ Blue Fam tournament kicked off with an exhilarating display of local football talent at the Gomasakho Sport Ground in Delmas over the weekend of May 24 and 25, 2025.
The tournament has drawn much excitement as teams battle fiercely for supremacy and the chance to claim the coveted top prize. With a significant prize pool up for grabs, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation and competitive spirit.
Over the two days, the top 16 teams showcased their skills in a series of thrilling matches that kept fans thoroughly engaged. One of the standout fixtures saw Young Guns face off against Si Happy Singaphezulu in a match that ended in a dramatic penalty shootout. Si Happy edged out Young Guns 5(2)–2(4), after a 2-2 draw in regular time, in a contest that epitomised the fierce competition on display. Supporters erupted in celebration as Si Happy progressed to the next round, while Young Guns exited with pride following a valiant effort.
Botleng United impressed with a dominant 4-0 victory over PJ Stars, controlling the game from start to finish. Their tactical discipline and teamwork shone through, marking them as strong contenders for the tournament crown and thrilling their supporters with their confident performance.
Waaikraal United also made waves, securing a 3-1 win over Botleng Classic. Their attacking flair coupled with solid defence proved too much for their opponents, setting them on a promising path deeper into the tournament.
Delpark United were tested against Barcelona but eventually lost 3-1 in a competitive clash. The match reflected the intensity of the competition, with both teams fighting hard for every advantage. Barcelona’s victory adds momentum as they prepare for the knockout stages.
On the second day, Izidla Mlilo eked out a narrow 4-3 win against Abracadabra in a high-scoring encounter that highlighted the attacking talents on both sides. Arbor United fought hard but were edged out 3-2 by Abacedi Bomcimbi, who displayed grit and determination. PSG Box also emerged victorious in a tight 3-2 contest against Phusha Phusha, while Shapshooters rounded off the day’s fixtures with a commanding 3-0 win over Makua United.
Tournament organiser Blessing Panash Ngavi expressed satisfaction with the event so far. Speaking to the Highveld Chronicle, he said, “The tournament has been excellent, and there have been no grievances. I truly appreciate how the teams conducted themselves on the field. For the next tournament, we hope to attract more sponsors to increase the prize money and elevate the competition to even greater heights.”
Ngavi’s passion for football and local talent development is clear. He also thanked Mbongeni Ncube for his support, as well as sponsors Reboost Energy Drinks, Bandile Harry Trading Enterprise Pty Ltd, and Bandile Zikhali. “Your support has been instrumental in making this event a tremendous success. We look forward to working with you again,” he added.
With the top eight teams advancing to the next stage on 31 May and the finals set for 1 June, anticipation continues to build. The winning team will receive R10,000, a trophy, and medals, while runners-up take home R5,000 and silver medals.
The tournament has already seen an impressive goal tally, with 20 goals on the opening day and 16 on the second, underscoring the attacking prowess of the teams.
