Emalahleni – Absa bank handed six JoJo water tanks and solar lights to Phillip Ndimande Secondary, Blackhill Primary and Mokibe Primary Schools on 14 October in Ezinambeni.
The initiative aims to provide clean water and sustainable energy to schools that struggle with water shortages and limited electricity. Each installation will support sanitation and make learning safer, especially during after-hours for matric learners.
Absa Regional Manager Jonathan Charles said the initiative was part of the bank’s corporate social investment programme, which seeks to empower communities through sustainable and practical solutions.
“Absa believes in driving change through action,” Charles said. “We chose to focus on water and energy because these are fundamental to education and community well-being. When schools have consistent access to clean water and lighting, teachers can focus on teaching and learners can focus on learning. We are proud to stand alongside the Emalahleni Municipality in making this possible.”
The Emalahleni Local Municipality tagged along to deliver the Jojo tanks and for the installation of the solar lights, even though this reflects poor service delivery.
Executive Mayor Vusi Nhlapo commended Absa for its ongoing commitment to community development, saying such partnerships were vital in addressing the social and infrastructural challenges faced by schools in Emalahleni.
“We appreciate the partnership between the municipality and Absa bank. It’s a clear example of how public and private sector cooperation can make a tangible difference in our communities,” Mayor Nhlapo said. “Water and electricity are basic needs and by ensuring our learners have access to both, we are investing in a conducive learning environment that promotes dignity and success.”
Phillip Ndimande Secondary’s Principal Simon Makola said the donations would bring lasting relief to both staff and learners who have long struggled with water shortages.
“This means a great deal to us. There were days when we had to release learners early because of water shortage and sanitation became a challenge. These JoJo tanks will ensure we have a reliable water source and the solar lights will make the school safer. We are deeply thankful to Absa and the municipality for remembering us,” he said.
Circuit Manager Mahlodi Chuene also applauded the effort, noting that such interventions improve teaching and learning conditions, especially in rural and semi-urban schools.
