NKANGALA – Maggie Skosana has until March 1, this year to step down as the municipal manager of Nkangala District Municipality.
Skosana has been appointed as the new Director-General (D-G) of the Mpumalanga provincial government in the Office of Premier Mandla Ndlovu.
Premier Ndlovu confirmed Skosana’s appointment in a statement released on Friday, January 31.
“The Premier convened a sitting of the Executive Council (EXCO) on Friday, January 31, 2025, to approve the appointment,” the statement read.
“During the session, EXCO members deliberated extensively on the importance of the position and the need to appoint a competent candidate as the head of the provincial administration.”
Skosana, who has been serving as municipal manager of Nkangala District Municipality since February 2014, has vast experience in the public service and extensive expertise in local government.
She holds a National Diploma in Civil Engineering, as well as Honours and Master’s degrees in Science and Business Administration.
Premier Ndlovu said Skosana’s academic achievements were also considered to align the appointment with the priorities of the 7th administration, which aims to build a capable, ethical, and developmental state.
He added that Skosana’s appointment reaffirms the government’s commitment to filling strategic positions with competent candidates based on merit.
“She was the best candidate among the best for the job. This signifies our commitment to appointing capable and qualified women in management positions, particularly those who have been previously marginalised. Her presentation on job creation and economic development was very impressive,” he stressed.
In 2022, Skosana made headlines when she disappeared for weeks following a hijacking incident that captured both local and national attention.
She and her driver, Gugu Mtsweni, were kidnapped just before entering the municipal offices in October. They were abducted by individuals dressed in police uniforms and driving a vehicle fitted with blue lights.
Skosana has set an unprecedented standard of excellence in local government leadership, having led Nkangala District to nine consecutive clean audits, with the most recent one from the 2023/24 audit outcomes.
