EMALAHLENI – The African National Congress (ANC) in Nkangala has accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of using the issue surrounding eMalahleni Speaker Mduduzi Nkosi to draw attention to itself.
Nkosi is facing rejection from eMalahleni communities, who marched on April 2, demanding his immediate removal following allegations of corruption, ill-discipline, and dividing the community.
The DA, on Wednesday, April 16, issued a statement indicating its intention to submit a motion of no confidence, accusing him of several transgressions including failure to execute his duties, breaking council rules, and failing to act impartially in council meetings, among others.
“eMalahleni cannot continue with a Speaker who is unable to carry out his duties correctly,” said DA councillor Maureen Scheepers.
Scheepers further stated that her party had formally written to the municipal manager requesting a special council sitting to table the motion against Nkosi.
The ANC, which is the DA’s partner in the Government of National Unity (GNU), told Highveld Chronicle that they are not entertaining the motion.
“As the ANC, we are rejecting that motion,” said ANC spokesperson in Nkangala, Sello Matshoga.
Matshoga also used the opportunity to scold the DA for showboating. “They are grandstanding because the people who raised the issues against the Speaker are not the DA,” he said. “It is the community of eMalahleni, who marched to the ANC offices and handed over the memorandum. After that, they [DA] immediately came up with the motion. That is being opportunistic and grandstanding.”
