The ANC is mourning the death of Councillor Grace Tiny Mthimunye, who passed away on June 13, 2024 due to illness. She was serving as the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) at the Nkangala District Municipality.

Councillor Tiny Mthimunye is remembered as a humble person who dedicated her life to changing the lives of the people. She was also known as a woman who loved beauty and knowledge. While in Zambia, she acquired her formal teaching qualifications, obtaining a Diploma in Teaching for Pre-School from 1984-1986 at Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation.

Her love for knowledge earned her the position of Speaker of the Nkangala District Municipality Council. She served in the structures of the ANC and SALGA and was elected as the Executive Mayor of Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality. A dedicated servant of the ANC Women’s League, she was the former Secretary of the Women’s League at Ward 13 in Pieterskraal and was later elected to serve as the Secretary of the ANCWL in the Nkangala Region from 2011–2015. In 2015, she was elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANCWL, a position she held until the NEC of the ANCWL was disbanded.

She also held a high political position in a municipality, having been elected deputy mayor of Mdutjana TLC just after the country gained freedom. Grace Tiny Mthimunye was born on July 31, 1961 in KwaThema, Springs. Her passing is deeply felt by her family, among whom are her identical twin sister, children, and grandchildren.

“We pledge to emulate you, in ensuring that the ANC you so loved continues to live amongst our communities and lead the masses. You have fought a good fight, rest now with the comrades who went before you, Cde Thembane Rakatsinyana, Cde Refilwe Mahlobogoane and Cde Linah Malatjie,” ANC Nkangala Secretary Sello Matshoga said in a statement.

“These are the comrades you shared a lot of wisdom with. As the ANC in Nkangala, we say thank you to the Mthimunye and Maseko families for borrowing us these fighters. They have left a legacy.”

Mthimunye’s life was celebrated during a moving memorial service led by the Nkangala District Municipality in Middelburg on Thursday, June 20.
