Seven suspects accused of abducting a Kriel HoĆ«rskool student for a R200,000 ransom remain in custody as the Kriel Magistrate’s Court has rejected their bail application.
KRIEL – The seven individuals accused of abducting a minor outside a high school in Ga-Nala, Kriel, on July 22, 2024, remain in custody after a failed attempt to secure bail.
The group appeared in the Kriel Magistrateās Court on Wednesday, August 21, following their detention since July 22.
The suspects first appeared in court on July 25, with subsequent hearings held on July 29, August 2, and August 14.
The situation took an unforeseen turn on August 14, when four of the suspectsāCaleb Kamahelo Sebatane (23), Thabang Mndebele (35), Dineo Zondo (41), and Dumisane Zondo (33)āchose to abandon their bail applications.
“Their decision was to remain in custody without pursuing bail,” said Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.
However, three other suspectsāSibongokuhle Mkhwanazi (21), Nkosingiphile Nkosi (42), and Mpumelelo Mkhize (42)āproceeded with their formal bail applications.
Despite their efforts, their plea for bail was dismissed on Wednesday, citing the severity of the charges and the potential threat to public safety.
Sekgotodi emphasised the gravity of the offence, noting that the abduction of a minor is a serious crime. “The court’s decision to deny bail underscores the seriousness of the matter. The investigation is ongoing, and we are committed to ensuring that justice prevails.”
The accused are suspected of orchestrating the kidnapping of a teenage girl in broad daylight, demanding a ransom of R200,000 from the girl’s mother.
This incident has deeply unsettled the local community and raised widespread concern.
The current condition and whereabouts of the victim remain undisclosed as the investigation progresses.
All seven suspects remain in custody, with the next court appearance set for October 11, 2024.
The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting issues of crime and safety in the area.
