Mthambothini – Dr Esther “Nostokana” Mahlangu, a globally acclaimed Ndebele artist and cultural icon, was graciously presented with a new residence by the automobile manufacturer BMW, short for Bavarian Motor Works, on October 3, 2024.

Situated in her native Mthambothini village within the Dr JS Moroka municipality, the recently constructed and fully furnished “Esther Mahlangu House” stands as a profound testament to the artist’s remarkable legacy.

Showcasing gogo Esther’s signature artistic flair, the vibrant Ndebele hut, features two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, lounge and two studio spaces providing her with both comfort and a dedicated workspace to continue her art.

BMW Group South Africa CEO, Peter van Binsbergen, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating that they presented the residence to gogo Mahlangu in acknowledgment of her BMW journey.

“Her innovative spirit, deeply rooted in tradition yet forward-thinking, has made an indelible mark on our brand for the past 33 years,” he said.

Peter also noted that the Esther Mahlangu House is a tribute to her influence on both the global art scene and the automotive industry. “Her work has redefined the way we see the intersection of culture and innovation.”

At the house’s grand reveal, esteemed gogo Esther conveyed her profound appreciation. “I shall rest within its walls and lay my woven mat with pride,” she declared, graciously inviting guests to explore her exquisitely adorned abode.

With a touch of humour, the 89-year-old recounted her many travels around the world, from France and Portugal to the United States, thanks to her renowned feather paintings.

Leah Mabuza, Mpumalanga’s MEC for culture, sports and recreation, was also present to celebrate the occasion. “We are thrilled to see a talent like Gogo Mahlangu’s reach international acclaim,” Mabuza said.

“Her work with BMW is a shining example of how our Ndebele culture continues to grow and gain recognition around the world.”

The MEC emphasised the Mpumalanga government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Ndebele culture, adding, “We will continue to support initiatives that highlight the beauty of our heritage,” she said.

This heartwarming gesture by BMW not only honors Mahlangu’s legacy but also ensures that her unique art form continues to inspire future generations.
