– In a recent announcement, Mr. Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment of Dr. Pieter Groenewald as the new Minister of Correctional Services. Former Mpumalanga MEC for Social Development, Lindiwe Ntshalintshali, has been appointed as Deputy Minister. Commissioner Thobakgale highlighted the positive potential of the new leadership, stating, “We are committed to working in tandem with the Ministry in our quest to bring about change through the implementation of innovative policies and programmes that promote rehabilitation, reduce overcrowding, and strive for the safety and security of our communities.”

Guided by principles of justice, accountability, and respect for human rights, the Department of Correctional Services looks forward to leveraging the wealth of experience brought by Dr. Piet Groenewald. Their strategic goals include improving correctional services to ensure they remain at the forefront of promoting a safer South Africa.

The Department has already made significant strides in redefining the purpose of corrections and aims to build on these successes while tackling existing challenges within correctional facilities.

“We extend our warmest congratulations to Minister Groenewald and Deputy Minister Ntshalintshali on their appointments,” Commissioner Thobakgale added, signaling a promising future ahead for Correctional Services under their stewardship.

The appointment of Dr. Groenewald and Ntshalintshali is expected to inject fresh momentum into the Department’s efforts to reform and improve the correctional system, marking a pivotal moment in its ongoing mission to serve the nation effectively.
