EMALAHLENI – Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and residents of Ward 14 staged a peaceful demonstration on February 17, 2025 to submit a memorandum to the eMalahleni Local Municipality. The memorandum, presented by Esther Molepo, a Provincial Command Team (PCT) member of the EFF deployed in the eMalahleni Subregion, outlined critical service delivery concerns affecting the community.
Among the issues raised were the lack of development in the ward, persistent service delivery failures, and concerns over transparency in housing allocation. The residents are demanding a publicised list of housing beneficiaries and the issuance of title deeds to rightful owners. Additionally, they highlighted the growing problem of illegal mining near their community, which they say poses safety hazards and environmental risks.
Residents also voiced their dissatisfaction with Ward 14 Councillor Given Koko, citing a lack of support and failure to address their long-standing grievances. Many feel abandoned by their local representative and are calling for greater accountability in leadership.
The memorandum was received by Acting Mayor and MMC for Development and Spatial Planning (DDP), Cllr Jerry Djiana. The residents have given the municipality a 14-day deadline to respond to their grievances, emphasising the need for swift and effective solutions.
Residents expressed their frustration, stating that these issues have remained unaddressed for years despite numerous complaints. They are calling on the municipality to take decisive action to improve living conditions and ensure fairness in the allocation of housing opportunities.
As the deadline approaches, the community remains hopeful that their concerns will be met with tangible responses from the municipality.
