NKANGALA – Excitement and anticipation fill the air in South Africa as President Cyril Ramaphosa officially declared May 29, 2024, as the date for South Africa’s national and provincial elections. This pivotal moment marks not only Ramaphosa’s potential second term but also the ushering in of the sixth administration under ANC rule since democracy began in 1994. The announcement follows two successful voter registration campaigns held in November 2023 and February 2024, ensuring maximum participation in this crucial election. Some residents in Nkangala also shared their views on what these elections mean to them. Tryphina Masuku, from Steve Tshwete, told a reporter it signals an important milestone in her life. “For me they mean the beginning of a new government that will put an end to loadshedding, unemployment and poverty,” she said. Thabisile Masombuka, from Dr JS Moroka municipality, shared that the sixth general elections mean continuation of the progress made so far. “This means the work done so far of improving people’s lives will continue, and improve others’ in line,” she said. “It signifies a change in my life,” said Sipho Maseko of Emalahleni municipality. “A change that will bring economic opportunities, jobs and a living in a crimeless society.” The Electoral Commission (IEC) echoed the excitement, welcoming the announcement and confirming their unwavering commitment to ensuring a smooth and successful election. They have already begun intensifying preparations for Election Day, as IEC Commissioner stated, “This pronouncement of the election date provides an unambiguous motivation for the commission to pull out all the stops in the intensification of preparations for election day.” During the recent budget speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that to ensure the effective discharge of its duties during elections and its other responsibilities beyond the polls, the Independent Electoral Commission is allocated an additional R2.3 billion. The police and defense are also allocated an additional R350 million to support elections. Furthermore, R200 million will be allocated for political party funding as political parties prepare for the general elections.
