– In a remarkable display of community spirit, the residents of Delmas are forging ahead with transformative initiatives, including giving an extra hand in service delivery in the Victor Khanye Municipality.
The residents are part of the “Delmas First” community initiative, launched in January 2023. Spearheaded by local businesses, Delmas Herleef members, and patriotic citizens, this initiative aims to transform the municipality.
On Thursday, June 20, 2024, volunteers were hard at work patching potholes, and cleaning and painting the Bernice Hospital road. This futuristic initiative was born out of a shared desire to uplift the community and create a more vibrant and welcoming environment, bringing a renewed sense of pride and ownership to the area.
Recognising the need for immediate action, local businesses and residents have pooled resources and manpower to tackle pressing issues plaguing the municipality. “We implemented the Delmas First strategy together with other Delmas businesses and patriotic citizens in Victor Khanye Municipality. The aim is to improve the area using our own resources,” Themba Mabaso, Gossa Foundation CEO, told Highveld Chronicle in an interview.
“One of the activities involved patching potholes on Bernice Hospital road, which is used by ambulances. This is an open effort where anyone can contribute their tools and labour to help fix the road. It is a community-driven project aimed at making Delmas a better place through collective action and self-reliance,” he said.
The collaborative spirit of future-focused Delmas First has been nothing short of inspiring. Volunteers from all walks of life have come together, united by a common goal of making their community a better place to live, work, and thrive. The initiative has not only fostered a sense of camaraderie but has also instilled a renewed sense of pride and ownership among the residents, who are now actively engaged in shaping the future of their beloved town.
Mayor Vusi Buda pledged support for this initiative. “We really appreciate this initiative and want to say that we would like to work in tandem with it to make sure we deal with the issue of potholes, dysfunctional streetlights, and attend to any other service delivery in the entire Victor Khanye Municipality to instil a sense of pride in being a Delmas resident.”
