MIDDELBURG – The Mpumalanga Department of Education has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of a 16-year-old Grade 8 learner from Mkhulu Combined School at Goedehoop Farm in Middelburg.
The learner was fatally stabbed by a fellow learner outside the school premises on November 26, 2024.
According to reports, the incident occurred after a fight broke out between two learners on their way home from school. The victim was allegedly stabbed while attempting to intervene and break up the altercation.
The learner succumbed to the stab wounds after being rushed to Middelburg Hospital.
A case has been opened at the Middelburg Police Station, and law enforcement authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
MEC for Education, Cathy Dlamini, extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing the loss as a devastating blow to the school and the community.
To support those impacted by the tragedy, the department has deployed inclusive education officials to provide psychosocial support to students, teachers, and affected families. This incident has reignited concerns over school safety and violence among learners, prompting calls for stricter measures to ensure the protection of students both within and outside school premises.
