The Sundra SAPS and Community Police Forum have partnered with the Democratic Alliance to foster hope and uphold dignity among learners at Sizofunda Primary School by providing grocery hampers and sanitary towels. A fractin of learners, grappling with significant challenges and originating from impoverished households, were identified as deserving recipients of these hampers during a handover event held on Wednesday, 3 April in Sundra. Parents were invited to collect the donations, while the school management team, along with the newly elected School Governing Body (SGB), received the parcels before distributing them to the parents of the selected learners who attended the event. Speaking on behalf of the school and the parents, SGB member Jessica Manana expressed gratitude for the donation, underscoring the school’s appreciation for the support and stressing the need for additional interventions to improve the learning environment, especially for the majority of learners coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. “We are grateful for the donation we received today as most parents here are unemployed, and it is really challenging to educate learners in an environment of scarcity. Hence, our plea is to receive more similar donations,” said Manana. “Any donation would be greatly appreciated to enhance our school since our toilets are in poor condition, and the fence does not fully cover the school, posing a security risk for the learners,” Manana concluded. Speaking to the publication, Ward 8 Councillor Diane Bath shared the DA’s motivation for participating in the initiative, stating, “We are here to uplift children in need. We understand that children today face numerous societal challenges such as human trafficking and domestic abuse. The success of the entire event was attributed to the prompt response of the DA and the organization, which made a substantial donation of grocery packs but chose not to be named publicly.
