In the midst of a pandemic a number of schools managed to improve their performance during the 2020 National Senior Certificate examinations, Hoerskool Delmas performed with an outstanding 100 % pass rate.
As the top performing school in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality Circuit, Hoërskool Delmas has contributed towards putting the Circuit at a 62.9 % pass rate and which in no doubt lead to the Nkangala District at the top of Mpumalanga Province to be one of the top two performing Districts in Mpumalanga in a tie with Bohlabela District at a 74,6 % pass rate.
The VLKM Circuit held the awards ceremony for the 2020 National Senior Certificates at Mafa Max Motloung Secondary School Hall to honor and celebrate the best performing schools, teachers and learners in the circuit. The performing school in the circuit Hoërskool Delmas is followed by the school with the most bachelors, Mafa Max Motloung with a 96 % pass rate and at number three, the most improved school in the circuit which is Sundra High School at 72, 9 %.
Hoerskool Delmas produced the top three performing learners at top one Anna Elizabeth Erasmus with a 93 % pass rate, top two is Hendrik Prinsloo who performed at a 92% rate and the two top three Chanelle Dominique Meyer and Sbahle Zulu from Mafa Max Motloung Secondary School with a tie at 87%. On previous Highveld Chronicle issue 148 the top three performing learners spoke about how they cope with matric during the pandemic year.
The top three best performing educators all from Hoerskool Delmas, Mrs L Schutte for Life Sciences, Mr C Du Plessis for Physical Sciences and Mrs S Pretorius for Geography, produced a 100 % pass rate in their respective subjects.
“In the face of the pandemic a number of people thought we should give up on the academic year. Despite the challenges a number of schools registered massive improvement,” said VKLM circuit manager, Thembelihle Ngwenya. The academic leaders’ acting circuit coordinator from Nkangala District, Master Skhosana and Steve Tshwete circuit manager, Logavenee Reddy, honoured the event.
In addition, VKLM Council honoured the top achiever and awards: Mayor Cllr Vusi Buda, Chief Whip Sponono Mahlangu, MMC for Social Services & Development Dorcus Yeko, MMC for Finance and Economic Development Henry Ngoma and Ward 3 Councillor Tebogo Malomane.
MayorBuda said, “Education will only impart knowledge to you but it will not help you find employment. It is up to you to be an employee or the employer who would reduce unemployment.” Cllr Buda was encouraging learners to consider other economic options as the country has a high rate of unemployment.
During his moving speech, Cllr Malomane acknowledged the work done by the organising committee and the sponsors such as Exxaro, Mbuyelo Coal and Gossa Holdings.
