EMALAHLENI – In a bid to confront stigma and promote inclusion, eMalahleni Municipality’s Transversal Unit teamed up mining giant Exxaro with the to commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day with a powerful outreach event held at the Municipal Council Chamber on Friday, June 13, 2025. The event focused on raising public awareness about the health risks and discrimination faced by people with albinism, while also providing practical support and a message of dignity and empowerment.
This year’s global theme, “Demanding our rights: Protect our skin, Preserve our lives,” resonated deeply throughout the event. With compassion and purpose, the organisers distributed essential care items including sunscreen, lip balm, sun hats, and other skincare products, critical tools that not only safeguard health but also symbolise respect and care for the albinism community.
“These are not just basic necessities,” said Exxaro representative Buhleng Masake. “They are vital resources that can greatly improve the quality of life and health of people living with albinism. We’re proud to be part of this cause.”
The event was attended by Exxaro staff, officials from the Municipality’s Transversal Unit, and members of the eMalahleni community living with albinism. It was a celebration of visibility, dignity, and empowerment, and served as an important platform to educate the broader public about the ongoing stigma and health risks faced by this community.
Municipal leaders and advocates encouraged ongoing dialogue around inclusion and the need for systemic change. As one attendee passionately declared, “Albinism is beautiful – let’s spread awareness.”
The day concluded with heartfelt conversations, renewed commitments, and a united call to action: to uphold the rights of people with albinism, protect their health, and ensure they are seen, heard, and celebrated.
