The Ikakaramba Foundation, in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse, hosted a drug awareness campaign at Bilo’s Carwash in Lynnville, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Thando Masango, Ikakaramba founder, joined forces with Ward 17 councilor, Sizwe Mathebula for a haircut & soup drive.
The event became a vibrant celebration of the international day dedicated to combating drug abuse.
Participants engaged in discussions about the challenges of drug addiction and strategies for overcoming the habit.
“We covered topics which included withdrawal symptoms, the risk of relapse, and the types of support needed to achieve and maintain sobriety,” Masango told the paper.
“The need for governmental and community initiatives was emphasized along with the importance of finding productive activities to prevent relapse post-rehabilitation.”
Attendees shared their personal stories, and unanimously concurred that lack of love and care, at home, often led them to substance abuse. “My father disowned me when he discovered that I’m using drugs, so I continued smoking because I had no one to support me,” said a recovering addict who remained anonymous.
“I lost everything because of drugs. Even worse, my family kept blaming me until I decided to live on the streets,” said another anonymous.
The event highlighted the crucial role of emotional support in preventing and addressing addiction.
The event also received donations from local businesses including Ohlanga Cash n’ Carry, PB Cash n’ Carry and various local tuck-shops. Councilor Mathebula expressed his excitement and satisfaction with the outcome. “We were able to feed over 70 people, and I am thrilled with the support we received from the community. This event is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together.”
The Ikakaramba Foundation and its partners have set a powerful example of community solidarity in the fight against drug abuse, fostering hope and support for those struggling with addiction in Emalahleni.
