To commemorate the International Day of Education, Glencore Coal donated 2268 sanitary towel packs to 189 learners from Amandla Primary School and Lehlaka Combined School in Witbank, Mpumalanga on the 24th of January 2024.
The donation forms part of its Khululeka Campaign, which was launched in 2023 with the aim of keeping more girls in school by providing them with sanitary towels so they feel empowered and free, highlighting the term ‘Khululeka’.
The donation holds immense importance as it directly addresses a fundamental barrier to education for many girls, which is access to sanitary hygiene products. By providing a year’s supply of sanitary towels, Glencore Coal is not only contributing to the girls’ physical health but also removing a significant obstacle that often hinders their consistent attendance and performance at school.
“We are thrilled to play a part in supporting these smart incredible girls through the Khululeka Campaign. Our belief is that every girl deserves an equal chance at education, unburdened by obstacles. By providing sanitary towels, we aim to contribute not just to their physical well-being but also to their empowerment and self-esteem, ” said Sibusiso Mbebe from Glencore’s iMpunzi Complex.
The organisation recognizes that without access to proper menstrual hygiene resources, girls may face challenges in pursuing education, affecting their academic performance and overall well-being.
Mrs Phiri, Principal from Amandla Primary School, shared her gratitude for donation saying, “Thank you for the donation you have made to our school, you have given our learners the motivation to fully focus on their schoolwork throughout the year. Your support means a lot to us, showing that their education and well-being matter.”
Glencore’s commitment to addressing issues affecting children in its host communities is a true testament to its understanding of the crucial link between education, empowerment and the future of the nation.
