PHOLA – The Nkangala District Municipality, in collaboration with various government departments and stakeholders, hosted a vibrant and impactful Career Expo at Makause Combined School Hall on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Held under the Emalahleni Local Municipality, the event aimed to equip learners with career guidance while raising awareness on energy efficiency, climate action, and innovation.

Bringing together learners from 12 schools across all six local municipalities under Nkangala, the expo was a celebration of knowledge, talent, and youth empowerment. Themed “Innovation for a Sustainable Future: Youth in Energy and Climate Action,” the event offered learners a unique opportunity to engage with professionals across various sectors and learn about careers linked to science, technology, and environmental sustainability.

A major highlight of the day was the Energy Efficiency Innovation and Just Transition Competition, which targeted Grade 10 Mathematics and Physical Sciences learners. Participants were tasked with visually demonstrating their understanding of energy efficiency and the concept of a just transition through creative poster designs. The competition encouraged learners to think critically about sustainable solutions for the future and showcased their awareness of global environmental challenges.

Stakeholders present included the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and the Presidential Climate Commission. Their participation ensured that learners received not only career advice but also a deeper understanding of South Africa’s energy landscape and the importance of transitioning to a greener economy.

The Career Expo also promoted interactive engagement between learners and sector representatives, offering insights into fields such as engineering, science, renewable energy, mining, policing, healthcare, and teaching. Exhibitors used displays and demonstrations to educate and inspire, planting the seeds of ambition in the minds of young attendees.

According to the organisers, the expo was designed to help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, especially in marginalised communities. The event concluded with the judging of the work showcased by the learners, where they received certificates and prizes in recognition of their efforts.

By combining career development with environmental awareness, the Nkangala Career Expo successfully reinforced the message that today’s youth are tomorrow’s changemakers.
