DELMAS – In a vibrant display of commitment to environmental protection and community unity, the Victor Khanye Local Municipality marked World Environment Day on 5 June 2025 with a series of impactful initiatives. Led by MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs, Nompumelelo Hlophe, alongside the Nkangala District Speaker Kabelo Boshomane and Executive Mayor Vusi Buda, the day featured clean-up campaigns, the launch of a climate change guide, and sustainability projects at local schools and centres, all aimed at inspiring local action against environmental degradation.
A notable highlight of the day was the official launch of the municipality’s first-ever climate change guide, which was formally presented to Mayor Buda. The guide symbolises a firm commitment to proactive climate action and equipping local government with the tools needed to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.
The day commenced with a spirited clean-up campaign at an illegal dumping site in Mandela Section, demonstrating the municipality’s dedication to tackling environmental issues head-on. In her keynote address, MEC Hlophe called on the public to unite in the fight against plastic pollution. “Let’s end plastic pollution – one action, one voice, and one generation at a time,” she urged.
Her message shifted the focus from guilt to empowerment, reminding residents that every individual has a role to play in protecting the environment. “We are not gathered here today to be weighed down by guilt, but rather to feel empowered to take decisive action against plastic pollution,” she added.
Hlophe emphasised that making small, mindful choices in daily life can collectively lead to meaningful change. Her remarks set the tone for the day’s activities, underlining the importance of community-led environmental stewardship.
As part of the programme, the municipality visited local institutions such as YARONA Pre-School and the Siyanqoba Disabled Centre. There, food gardens were established, and essential items – including smart agricultural boxes, JoJo tanks, and trees – were distributed. These efforts were made possible through collaboration with partners such as the Plastic Industry, Young in ZIP, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and various NGOs. The joint effort highlighted the importance of partnerships in driving sustainable development.
The day concluded with a community engagement session at Simon Gondwe Stadium. Executive Mayor Buda expressed his appreciation to MEC Hlophe, stakeholders, and community members for their support and participation. He also highlighted the agricultural potential of the area, stating, “If we focus on agriculture, we can create more job opportunities for our community.”
The initiatives are expected to make a lasting impact, promoting a cleaner, greener environment while empowering residents to take ownership of their ecological footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
