MIDDELBURG – The Izintombi Zekhethelo Cultural Group is a socio-cultural organization dedicated to instilling discipline, pride, and courtesy in young women from Rockdale and Extension 24, situated to the east of Middelburg.
The area grapples with unemployment, poverty, and a lack of skills and development opportunities among its youth, which can lead to social ills such as teenage pregnancy, prostitution, drug abuse, and alcoholism, disproportionately affecting young women.
“I looked at that and told myself there has to be a way in which young women growing up here are taught skills that will make them realize their value,” explained Nompumelelo Mthembu, the group’s founder.
Nompumelelo shared with the Highveld Chronicle that she initiated the group in 2018, inviting teenage girls from the area to impart life skills and customs rooted not far from tradition.
The group engages in cultural dances, acting, drama, debates, and other activities. Additionally, they facilitate discussions and offer advice on various topical issues affecting young women, including HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), teenage pregnancy, peer pressure, and healthy living.
Moreover, they advocate for sexual abstinence and prepare the young women for virginity testing. “We encourage them to stay pure as they are and not to rush into engaging in sexual activities before marriage,” Nompumelelo emphasised.
She noted that the group started small but has grown significantly over time. “Izintombi Zekhethelo keeps on growing, and we aim to effect positive change in society, especially among young girls and women.”
Buhle Nkosi, a mentor within the group, disclosed her campaign aimed at raising funds to donate sanitary towels to needy young girls. “Many of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford to buy these essentials. I recognized the necessity for this campaign to provide assistance,” she expressed.
Buhle also appealed to anyone willing to donate to contact her at +27606166307 or +27 78 984 5664.
