MPUMALANGA – The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) appears to be a soft target for extortionists and fraudsters.
Earlier this year, the department issued a warning about individuals impersonating the department’s political head, MEC Thulasizwe Thomo, in an attempt to request money from unsuspecting individuals.
On Friday, January 24, the department issued another red alert involving fraudulent emails circulated by internet fraudsters.
According to the department, the emails, falsely claiming to be from the department, are targeting business people who recently submitted tenders, soliciting funds under the guise of official transactions.
“We want to categorically state that these emails are not from the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport and are part of a scam to defraud unsuspecting individuals and businesses,” the department said in a statement.
The department further stated that it takes this matter very seriously and urges all individuals who receive such emails to exercise caution and refrain from responding to or engaging with the senders.
It also cautioned members of the public to be aware of the following key points:
Do Not Respond: If you receive an email that solicits funds or personal information purportedly from our Department, do not respond to the email or provide any information.
Do Not Make Contact: Avoid calling any cellphone numbers or email addresses provided in these communications, as they are likely to be associated with the scammers.
Report Suspicious Activity: We encourage anyone who receives these fraudulent emails to report them immediately to local law enforcement authorities, as well as to the department. You can reach out to us directly through our official contact channels for guidance.
Verify Communication: Any communications bearing the DPWRT logo. If you are unsure of the authenticity of a communication, please verify it with the department directly.
“Our department is committed to maintaining the integrity of our procurement processes and ensuring the safety of our stakeholders. We will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to investigate these fraudulent activities and protect our business partners,” concluded the statement.
