MPUMALANGA – All Systems Go for IEC’s final Voter Registration Weekend Ahead of National and Provincial Elections
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is gearing up to expand the voter register and enable more residents of Mpumalanga to participate in the upcoming national and provincial elections. The electoral commission encourages all unregistered Mpumalanga residents to register and verify their details on the weekend of 3 and 4 February.
Thanduxolo Thembeni, the spokesperson for IEC Mpumalanga, anticipates a stronger turnout for voter registration during the upcoming weekend. “We are expecting a better attendance for people who want to register to vote this coming weekend,” said Thanduxolo Thembeni, IEC Mpumalanga spokesperson. This marks the second voter registration weekend following the successful event on November 17 and 18 last year, where over 2.9 million South Africans registered and updated their details on the voters’ roll.
Thembeni expressed surprise at the high turnout in November, exceeding expectations with over 2 million registrations during that weekend. He expects a significant number of registrations this weekend, attributing the anticipation to the return of young people to schools and tertiary institutions.
“In November we were surprised when the turnout went above expectations as we registered more than 2 million during that weekend,” he said.
“We are expecting a fairly high number this coming weekend given the fact that young people have gone back to schools and tertiary institutions.”
Nationwide, the IEC is prepared to welcome eligible South Africans at 23,303 registration stations across the country for registration or details verification ahead of the elections. The registration stations will operate from 08h00 to 17h00 on both days.
