MIDDELBURG – Mpumalanga police authorities have vowed to take disciplinary measures against a police constable caught sleeping on duty. The incident occurred during the special votes on Monday, 27 May, in Steve Tshwete, Middelburg.
Speaking at the Mpumalanga IEC results operation centre in White River on Thursday, Provincial Commissioner Daphney Manamela said investigations would be conducted to establish the circumstances that led to the police officer sleeping on duty.
A member of the public, Simon Hlatshwayo, told the paper that it is correct procedure to conduct investigations to understand what made the officer sleep on the job. “Investigations will reveal what actually happened as opposed to rushing to suspend the police,” he said. “Police are human beings, they get tired just like everyone else. Even if he is found guilty, I think a minor penalty should be imposed.”
Manamela stated that the matter is being handled internally. “Investigations are taking place, and these are internal measures that will be addressed internally,” she said.
After the incident, Manamela reminded police of the importance of adhering to the SAPS code of conduct. “The residents of Mpumalanga feel safe and have confidence in members of the police, especially during this important democratic process. The SAPS plays a vital role in ensuring that the 2024 National and Provincial Elections are free, fair, and credible,” she said.
“As expected, members of the police are to be vigilant, proactive, and responsive to any incidents that may arise. Members are also reminded to continue working closely with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth and successful election day. The conduct of members will have a direct impact on the public’s perception of the police and the credibility of the work carried out in support of the IEC mandate.”
