MIDDELBURG – The extended Sister Mashiteng Clinic in Mhluzi, Middelburg, will alleviate the strain on Middelburg Hospital services and improve access to 24-hour care. The clinic, renovated at a cost of R3 million, was officially reopened on Friday, May 17 2024.
Previously, the clinic operated between 07:00 and 19:00, but its hours have now been extended to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini stated that the clinic serves an estimated catchment population of 30,768 with an average annual headcount of 29,780. “The average professional nurse clinical workload stands at 46.7, therefore a need was identified to enhance access to 24-hour care and alleviate the strain on Middelburg Hospital’s maternity services,” she said. “Consequently, a decision was made to upgrade the infrastructure of Sister Mashiteng Clinic and extend its operating hours to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Manzini also appreciated and commended the support from the private sector, saying that the investment value for the construction, furnishing, and equipping of the Midwives Obstetric Unit, amounting to R2,990,000, will improve access to healthcare services for the community.
General Manager for Izimbiwa Coal, Hlayiseka Chauke, and Group HR Executive for Into Africa Mining and Exploration (Pty) Ltd, Dingaan Similo, both articulated their social responsibility initiatives of giving back to the community and pledged their commitment to working with the government on projects that benefit community members. “We will strive to adhere to the principle of working together towards the wellness and health of the people that we serve,” they said.
The MEC also reminded everyone to visit clinics for medical check-ups to diagnose ailments early and get the needed assistance from healthcare professionals.
