“We don’t need an economic expert to realise the ramifications of an unsafe town”

MIDDELBURG – EFF Chief Whip in Steve Tshwete Municipality, Joseph Ngobeni, has pledged his commitment to prioritising the safety of the town as a key driver in attracting investments.

Ngobeni, who was appointed as the new Member of the Mayoral Council (MMC) for Community Safety in a reshuffle by Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela on Wednesday, September 02, 2024, emphasised the critical role safety plays in the economic growth and development of the municipality.

In an interview, Ngobeni stated that safety is a pressing issue affecting Steve Tshwete’s prosperity and highlighted his intention to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a safer environment.

“I firmly believe that it is essential to ensure safety across the entire Steve Tshwete community. There is a significant amount of work to be done in this department, and we will need close collaboration with various stakeholders to achieve our common goal, whether it involves law enforcement, community policing forums, or other groups working alongside the SAPS.”

Ngobeni further stressed the adverse effects of rising crime on the town’s economic prosperity. “The surge in criminal activities within Steve Tshwete calls for a proactive approach. You don’t need an advanced degree in economics to predict the impact on our town if the safety of residents and businesses is compromised. An unsafe environment does not attract investment,” he stated.

He also expressed his eagerness to work alongside other political parties to achieve the goal of a safer municipality, adding, “This includes collaboration with the African National Congress and other like-minded organisations.”

The vacancy in the mayoral committee arose after the passing of Ward 10 Councillor Gift Maseko in June this year. Maseko, who was also the MMC for Infrastructure Development and Technical Services, left a gap in the council.

Mayor Masilela reassigned Councillors Marumo Sekgwele, Ernest Nkwana, and Caroline Mphego to manage Infrastructure Development and Technical Services, Spatial Development and Human Settlement, and Corporate Services, respectively.

He noted that the reshuffle was aimed at fostering cooperation with other political parties to ensure stability within the municipality.
