EMALAHLENI – Early detection and prevention were highlighted at an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign hosted by the Nkangala District AIDS Council.
The event, held on November 22, 2024, at KG Mall in eMalahleni, aimed to raise awareness about HIV, STIs, TB, and teenage pregnancy. It also focused on strategies to prevent the spread of HIV and protect infants from mother-to-child transmission.
Organisations such as MINA, Brothers for Life, the Transversal Unit, Siyaphilisa Community Home-Based Care, WITS RHI, Mothers2Mothers, and Municipal Health Services participated, offering a range of programmes and services.
Attendees had access to free HIV/AIDS testing, learned about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) as an HIV prevention method, and explored the benefits of medical circumcision. Workshops also educated participants on checking food expiry dates and identifying safe and unsafe food options, empowering the community to make informed dietary choices.
Local leaders and health professionals stressed the importance of early detection and proactive prevention in reducing stigma and building a healthier, informed society.
“I wish this could be a regular thing so that everyone can get tested and not wait for campaigns like these. I try to get tested as often as I can,” said Lihle Mthunzi, a resident of Vosman.
However, not all residents shared the same enthusiasm, with some suggesting they should be incentivised to undergo testing.
Nkangala District Municipality Mayor, Thomas Ngwenya, emphasised the need for people to know their status and educate themselves on ways to protect themselves and their loved ones. “The fight against HIV/AIDS is not just about treatment; it’s about education and prevention,” he said.
On December 1, the world will commemorate the 37th World AIDS Day under the theme “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress.” The annual observance serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing global commitment to prevent new HIV infections and ensure essential services for all people living with HIV.
