DELMAS – In celebration of Women’s Month, female officials from various stakeholders came together for the Nkangala Region Women’s Operation on August 22, 2024, along the Delmas-N12 route. The operation, dubbed “Women in Action,” aimed to promote women empowerment and raise awareness about road safety. The Control Provincial Inspector commented on the purpose of the parade: “The purpose is to promote unity among female officials, who are women in uniform,” she said.
The Women in Action operation proved productive with impressive results: 481 vehicles were stopped and checked, 199 summonses were issued, and one driver was arrested for not having a driver’s licence. Additionally, 53 drivers and 126 passengers received road safety education, and 25 drivers underwent health screenings. The operation also saw the distribution of 2,000 raincoats and 162 pamphlets. Rhononani Masango from the Department of Health spoke about the services they brought to the event: “We check body vitals, distribute contraceptives, and hand out pamphlets that teach people how to live a healthy life,” she stated.
The stakeholders involved in the operation included female officials from law enforcement, traffic inspectorate, overload control, road safety education and communication, transport inspectorate, Victor Khanye local traffic, SAPS, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), fire and disaster management, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Home Affairs, Seriti, and the Department of Health.
The operation also led to the arrest of 13 undocumented migrants. A Community Officer for Khutala Colliery emphasised the contribution of their stakeholders: “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to join forces with different stakeholders and are honoured to have accepted the invite from the traffic department. We are pleased to be part of this prestigious event, where women from various sectors unite to combat illegal immigration, minimise crime, and ensure that citizens fully abide by law enforcement and road safety regulations on our national roads.” She added, “We at Seriti are proud to be part of this awareness initiative and will continue to support all upcoming events from the traffic department.”
The success of the operation highlighted the power of collaboration and empowerment among women in uniform.
