PHOLA – The eMalahleni Local Municipality, in partnership with Mzimkhulu Mine under the Mwelase Group of Companies, officially launched a 120-metre access road and stormwater project at the busy intersection of the R545 and Mahlobo Street in Phola on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
This long-awaited development was formally handed over to Nkosi Sikile Construction during a ceremony attended by community members, stakeholders, and local leaders.
The project follows requests from local residents raised during recent iZimbizo community engagements, where the need for improved road access and proper stormwater management was emphasised.
Councillor Petty Mgube, who was among the dignitaries at the launch, commended the initiative and shared words of encouragement. “This project is a sign of real progress. It shows that our communities are not forgotten and that partnerships between government and the private sector can change lives,” she said.
The project aims to address long-standing infrastructure challenges in the area, particularly during the rainy season when residents are often affected by waterlogging and unsafe road conditions. It is expected to not only improve road safety and accessibility but also create temporary employment opportunities for locals.
Municipal officials urged the community to support the contractors, ensure the project is completed on time, and protect the site from vandalism.
Speaker of Council, Nomusa Shabangu, officiated the ceremony on behalf of the Executive Mayor. She stated that the project is a direct result of the municipality’s commitment to listening to residents and responding to their needs. “We are proud to see that platforms like uZimbizo are making a real difference in service delivery,” said Shabangu.
One of the residents, Mosa Tjiane, expressed gratitude and relief at the start of construction. “We’ve been drowning in water and mud during the rainy season for far too long. We welcome this project with both hands,” he said.
The event concluded with a ceremonial handover and the cutting of the ribbon, marking the official commencement of the road construction.
