KwaMhlanga Hospital Maintains Remarkable Record with Zero Child Deaths from Diarrhoea and Pneumonia

KWAMHLANGA – Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu has expressed his excitement over the efficient management and exceptional healthcare services at KwaMhlanga Hospital in Thembisile Hani Municipality.

Premier Ndlovu conducted an oversight visit to the hospital on Thursday, January 23, 2025, assessing its operations and service delivery. Opened in 1995, KwaMhlanga Hospital serves a population of over 431,000 people, according to the 2022 Census. The hospital functions as a crucial referral centre, supporting 14 clinics, seven community health centres, and five mobile units covering 21 service points. Additionally, it provides medical care to patients from neighbouring provinces, including Limpopo and Gauteng, as well as Dr JS Moroka Municipality.

During his visit, the Premier commended the hospital’s management and healthcare workers for their dedication, particularly highlighting the facility’s remarkable track record in maternal and child healthcare. KwaMhlanga Hospital has reported zero maternal deaths, zero neonatal deaths, and no fatalities of children under the age of five during the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.

“These achievements are a testament to the commitment and hard work of the medical staff at KwaMhlanga Hospital,” said Premier Ndlovu. “Providing quality healthcare services and ensuring the well-being of our mothers and children is a priority, and this hospital is leading by example.”

Furthermore, the hospital has successfully maintained a record of zero child deaths due to diarrhoea and pneumonia, two of the most common causes of child mortality in South Africa. This success is attributed to improved healthcare protocols, timely interventions, and effective community outreach programs that promote early detection and treatment of childhood illnesses.

Premier Ndlovu’s visit reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring that all citizens receive quality medical care. He emphasised the importance of sustaining KwaMhlanga Hospital’s high standards and encouraged other healthcare facilities to adopt similar practices.
