MIDDELBURG – Elated Mpumalanga top learner, Gugu Libambo, told learners at Mphanama Comprehensive School that her hard work, determination, and perseverance paid off in grand style.
Gugu drove home in a brand new Toyota Vitz as a reward for her excellent academic performance in the 2024 matric class. Keys to her vehicle were officially handed over at a ceremony held at the school on Friday morning, January 24, 2025.
Having achieved top marks in mathematics and life sciences, Gugu not only emerged as the overall best learner in Mpumalanga province but also ranked number one in the Nkangala District and number three in the quintile schools category nationally.
“My matric year didn’t just drive me crazy; now it drives me in style,” she said in a heartfelt vote of thanks.
The 18-year-old, who dreams of studying medicine at the University of Cape Town, credited her success to family support, teachers, and classmates, particularly her mathematics teacher.
Reflecting on the challenges she faced, Gugu spoke candidly about the struggles of attending a public school with limited resources, including a shortage of textbooks and overcrowded classrooms. However, she viewed these obstacles as opportunities to be resourceful, using online platforms and seeking extra help from teachers, “even those from other schools.”
Gugu’s determination and vision for a brighter future, “not only for myself but also for my community,” kept her motivated. She shared an empowering message with the class of 2025, reminding them that their circumstances do not define them. “Where you come from does not determine where you go,” she said, encouraging them to stay focused, work smart, and always seek help when needed.
Out of 204 learners who entered matric at Mphanama Comprehensive School, 199 wrote their final exams. The quintile 3 school achieved a 96% pass rate, with 78 bachelor entries, 81 diploma passes, and 32 higher certificates.
In her keynote address, Education MEC Cathy Dlamini praised the school’s performance, crediting the dedication of its teachers, who sacrificed their personal time for the benefit of their students, and the unwavering support from parents, especially Gugu’s family.
MEC Dlamini also acknowledged the collective effort that has placed Mpumalanga on the national map, stating that the province is now recognised far and wide, extending beyond the boundaries of the Steve Tshwete Municipality.
Encouraging the class of 2025, Dlamini urged them to remain diligent in their studies, emphasising that their success will not only benefit their future but also contribute to the progress of the entire province. She expressed her gratitude to Gugu, stating that while she may seem ordinary, it was her discipline and perseverance that helped her reach such remarkable heights. The MEC thanked Gugu for her role in showcasing Mpumalanga’s educational potential.
