DELMAS – In response to the growing concern over abandoned pets, Delmas Animal Shelter (DAS) is encouraging community members to consider adopting a furry companion. The initiative by DAS, a no-kill shelter, also offers a sponsor-a-dog option, allowing individuals to support a dog for R250 per month. Driven by a passion for animal welfare, the shelter aims to address the increasing number of pets left homeless due to various circumstances. According to recent reports from Delmas animal shelters, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of abandoned pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. This surge is attributed to factors such as economic hardships, changes in living situations, and misconceptions about pet care responsibilities. “We are witnessing a concerning trend where more pets are being left behind or surrendered to shelters,” said Refilwe Masombuka, a Botleng-based animal welfare volunteer. “These animals deserve loving homes where they can thrive and be cherished members of a family.” To address this issue, the DAS has launched the Adopt a Pet Today campaign, actively promoting the benefits of pet adoption. Prospective pet owners are encouraged to visit the shelter, where they can meet a variety of animals in need of a forever home. The adoption process includes consultations with counsellors who help match pets with suitable families based on lifestyle and preferences. “Adopting a pet not only saves a life but also brings immense joy and companionship to households,” said John Smith, a Delmas Westridge resident. “Each adoption helps reduce the strain on animal shelters and gives these animals a second chance at happiness.” The initiative also seeks to educate the public on responsible pet ownership and dispel myths surrounding shelter animals. As momentum builds, organisers hope to see an increase in successful adoptions and a decrease in the number of homeless pets. They emphasise the importance of commitment and love in providing a stable environment for adopted animals. For those interested in adopting, DAS is open for visits during designated hours, offering opportunities to meet potential pets and begin the adoption process.
