PHOLA – The SAPS in Phola have organised an Anti-Crime Awareness campaign to curb crimes targeting the elderly in the area.
With the aim of educating elderly people about security and community safety issues, the SAPS members held the campaign on 26 March 2025 at Event Palace.
Phola SAPS has been actively engaged in supporting Community Policing Forums (CPFs) and Crime Prevention Warderns (CPWs) in the area to effectively execute their mandate. This was made possible through financing projects, the revival and restructuring of CPFs, and the establishment of new CPWs to be more effective.
This recognises the fact that the police service and government agencies cannot fight crime alone and that it requires the involvement and active participation of all communities and sectors of society to ensure the safety of the elderly.
Overall, a safety and security liaison plays a vital role in protecting the elderly population and promoting their physical and emotional well-being in their golden years. It is essential to provide the necessary support and resources to help them live safely and independently for as long as possible.
The eMalahleni municipality, SAPS, Pastor’s Forum, SoGhutje Royal House, Emalahleni Fire Disaster, and Fovok made presentations about their organisations and the services they offer.
Nomsa Sindane, Police Sector Manager, said the Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998 is a comprehensive law that addresses domestic violence. “It recognises that domestic violence is a serious social issue and aims to protect victims who are in a domestic relationship with an abuser,” she said. “The Act provides for the issuing of protection orders and addresses matters related to domestic violence,” said Sindane.
She further stated that the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006 is intended to protect, promote, and maintain the status, rights, well-being, and security of older persons. It is an Act aimed at combating the abuse of older persons.
