eMalahleni – Stephen Zulu Shongwe, better known as Smezi, is making a significant mark in the South African music industry. The 32-year-old Witbank-born artist has built an impressive career, starting as a backing vocalist for gospel singer Mzayoni Tsabedze about 15 years ago.

His early exposure to the industry led him to a recording contract with Soul Eagle Records, where he recorded his debut album, Uyacombola, in 2010. Since then, his passion and determination have driven him to release multiple albums and eventually launch his own record label, Stebie Records Pty Limited.

Smezi’s discography includes Emakhosini, Umzwangedwa (2022), Mam Stebie, Ngikwenzeli Mali (2023), Ezibhuhlungu Azipheli, Smezi Kazi (Palisa), and Let’s Celebrate (2024). This year, he has already released two singles, Kgole and Owakho. His music is available on all major digital platforms, making it accessible to fans across the country.

His recent nomination at the 6th Annual Mzansi Arts and Media Awards is a testament to his growing influence in the industry. The recognition comes after years of dedication to his craft, continually evolving his sound while staying true to his musical roots. The nomination highlights the impact of his music, particularly in the amapiano genre, where he continues to push creative boundaries.

For Smezi, his musical journey is deeply personal. He draws inspiration from industry icons like Zakes Bantwini, whom he admires for his ability to balance music, business, and family life. His latest album, Let’s Celebrate, holds special meaning, as it was inspired by a personal health scare. In November 2024, he was hospitalised due to food poisoning after consuming food from a Somalian shop. This experience made him appreciate life even more, leading to the creation of the title track.

Other songs that hold special significance for him include Uphakeme, which expresses gratitude for divine protection, and Gogo, a heartfelt tribute to his grandmother. His music, often infused with personal experiences, resonates with many of his listeners.

One of his greatest achievements is hearing his songs played on radio stations across the country. He sees this as validation that his music is reaching and connecting with people.

Looking ahead, his goal is to expand his reach beyond South Africa and secure international bookings. Smezi believes that continuous learning is key to success in the ever-changing music industry. He encourages upcoming artists to stay curious, keep evolving, and never stop striving for greatness.

His journey from a backing vocalist to an award-nominated artist is a testament to his dedication and passion for music.
