eMalahleni – In a significant move towards improving cleanliness and promoting environmental responsibility, MMC for environmental and waste management, Nombuso Mokwana, recently launched a waste management initiative in eMalahleni’s ward 1.
As part of the initiative, residents were given waste bins to help tackle the growing problem of illegal dumping in the area.
The handover of the bins was not only a practical solution but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal dumpsites, which pose serious environmental and health risks. “These bins will be collected every Thursday, and it is essential for the community to use them properly to keep our environment clean,” said Mokwana, encouraging residents to take an active role in maintaining a cleaner and safer community.
The initiative was made possible through a collaboration between the eMalahleni municipality and mining conglomerate Thungela.
The collaboration stemmed from the recognition of the need to address the issue of illegal dumping, an issue that is also prevalent in areas like Duvha Park Ext 1.
The primary aim of the partnership was to provide the community with waste bins and educate them on waste separation practices.
“We are committed to raising awareness about the importance of waste management and its role in maintaining a healthy environment. This collaboration is just the beginning, and we plan to continue working closely with the municipality to make a long-term impact,” said Nadine Joubert, a representative from Thungela Shared Services.
Residents were eager to receive the waste bins and expressed their relief over the removal of illegal dumpsites, which had been a significant problem in the area.
Many promised to actively report illegal dumping and take responsibility for keeping their community clean.
With this collaborative effort, both the municipality and Thungela are optimistic about the positive changes this initiative will bring, paving the way for more efforts aimed at enhancing waste management and environmental awareness in eMalahleni.
