TWEEFONTEIN D – Lesego Asanda Mnisi, from Tweefontein D in KwaNdebele, is conceptualising an idea that will lead to the creation of a globally recognised holiday to observe the impacts of COVID-19 and gender based violence (GBV) global pandemics.

The 20 year-old youngster told the publication the holiday would be called “Global Unity Day”, and shall serve to raise awareness of the two pandemics as critical issues affecting society.

Lesego believes that both COVID-19 and GBV have significantly impacted countless lives. COVID has brought the world to a standstill with lockdowns, school closures and travel restrictions, while GBV remained a serious issue with countless individuals suffering in silence.

“The goal of Global Unity Day is to bring people together to remember those we have lost due to these challenges and inspire collective action to address these problems,” explained Lesego.

“It serves as a reminder of our strength in overcoming the hardships brought on by both the coronavirus and the rise in gender-based violence.”

According to the World O Meter, over 7 million people have died so far from COVID-19 outbreak as of April 13, 2024.

On the other hand, GBV remains troubling. Studies of World Health Organization show that 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.

In South Africa, reports indicate that GBV cases have risen to about 54% since the pandemic began, leading to a national outcry for urgent action.

Lesego suggests using the protea flower as a symbol for Global Unity Day.

“The protea blooms in various colors, representing our diverse cultures, religions and backgrounds. More importantly, it symbolizes strength, courage and resilient qualities we all need to face these challenges head-on,” she stated.

“Global Unity Day will not only be a day of remembrance but also a moment to reflect on what steps we can take moving forward. Suggestions include moments of silence for those we’ve lost, as well as community gatherings and concerts to celebrate our unity.”

Lesego also urges everyone, especially the Clover University community, to embrace this idea.

“I believe we are stronger together. Let’s take action to create a more compassionate and inclusive world. By remaining united, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.”

She added that the proposed Global Unity Day has the potential to inspire hope and solidarity in a world that has “seen too much pain”.

“Let’s work together to honor those affected by COVID-19 and GBV, and remind ourselves that we can create a better future for everyone. Through unity, we can heal and bring about change,” concluded Lesego.
