MBOMBELA – The upcoming MTN8 Soccer Final at Mbombela Stadium on 13 September is being celebrated as more than just a football match. Premier Mandla Ndlovu has described it as a major economic opportunity for Mpumalanga, a chance to boost tourism and showcase the province’s hospitality to the thousands of visitors expected.
“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to be chosen as the host province for the MTN8 Soccer Final. This is not just a football match, but an event that will showcase the scenic beauty and hospitality of Mpumalanga,” said Premier Ndlovu.
With local hotels, restaurants and guesthouses set to benefit from the influx, Ndlovu said the event would position Mpumalanga as a destination of choice, not only for sport but for leisure and culture as well.
Mbombela Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a capacity of 43,500 has become a key venue for high-profile events and has previously hosted packed Springbok matches, the Mpumalanga Show and the Metro FM Music Awards. Its track record of drawing large crowds and stimulating the local economy has made it a trusted stage for both sporting and cultural occasions.
“We extend a warm invitation to all football enthusiasts to join us in our beautiful province for this spectacular final. Let us come together to support soccer in general, and experience the charm of our province. We look forward to welcoming everyone and making this final a memorable occasion,” Ndlovu said, while urging stakeholders in transport, security and logistics to ensure a world-class experience.
Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC Leah Mabuza echoed Ndlovu’s sentiments, saying the PSL’s confidence in choosing Mbombela Stadium was a clear sign that Mpumalanga has the capability to host major finals. She expressed hope that the stadium would be filled to capacity on match day, sending a message to organisers that the province is ready for more.
“The Wafa Wafa final will not only bring joy to football supporters but will also put our province on the map. It is my wish that football supporters will fill the Mbombela Stadium to capacity, giving the PSL even more reasons to bring future cup finals to our province,” said MEC Mabuza, who further called on soccer fans to purchase their tickets on time and arrive early at the stadium on the day of the game.
The final will see Orlando Pirates take on Stellenbosch FC in what promises to be another high-energy clash. In last year’s edition, held at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Pirates claimed a dramatic 3–1 victory over Stellenbosch, securing their third consecutive MTN8 title. The final comes at a time when Mpumalanga is working hard to improve its rankings as the leading province with the highest number of international and domestic visitors as spearheaded by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA).
